Don't suppose it could be anything to do with scouting players during last season and making approaches as soon as last season ended, thereby giving us time to make a full assessment of the player, his health and financial demands.

There's a risk, of course, that short term signings will make such an impact that they'll be reluctant to sign another contract and leave for a bigger club at the end of the season for nothing. But, since we've paid nothing up front then maybe that's a fair deal.
