the board backed Worthy because he got to a playoff final and then won the division title

so to be fair to them he had earned a bit of trust.

In my view a board shouldn't get too involved in individual player selection (though they should be involved in terms and conditions etc!). They should pick the manager they want (and therefore presumably trust) then give him a budget and let him get the players he wants.
