Yeah could be, although iTunes is/was protected and they are/were MP4 not MP3

I suspect most people just rip at the lowest quality they can get away with to save space. The quality of playback on most MP3 players/mobiles is piss poor, so no need for anything approaching CD quality. I get significant distortion on my laptop with just about anything less than 192kbps MP3. I did accidentally rip some at 128 MP4 and it was OK, but much better at 192 MP4

I've never fully understood the attraction of using an online service. If I like the music enough, I'd rather have the CD.
