Yep, I can elaborate on that now, as I was the one who answered the original question...

It isnt a case of clearing the dust from the exterior of the fan - I decided to open the whole thing up and do inside.

If your PC is the same as mine (I have no idea how standard a setup is), it wasnt the fan that had the build up of dust, it was below a second, smaller fan inside the unit. I unscrewed the fans and looked underneath, and found what I first thought was a filter of some kind; infact, it was a layer of dust about 1/3 inch thick, caused by four years of build up.

Cleared that out, and converted my base unit from one that shut itself down about very two in three times of trying to burn DVDs, into one that has not only had no problems since, but also seems to run faster and more efficiently.
