Matlab is written in C (was originally Fortan way back in the early 80s). Matlab is used commerically, but if you have time critical applications it is really only good for prototyping. If you write efficient Matlab it is fast (it is built on ATLAS), but if you code Matlab as you would, say C++, it'll be 1000s of times slower!

Right now I am on the computing faculty at UEA.
