The brother of a mate of mine was shot in the stomach at point blank range by a mugger in Boston (he made the mistake of fighting back). But it was early morning and no one was around. A couple of joggers found him semi-concious against a tree about 15 mins later and after some reluctance to approach him called an ambulance - fortunately he was just round the corner from Mass. General. Fourteen hour operation and cost about $40000 in insurance. He said when the ambulance arrived the paramedics thought the bullet was still in him and prepared to remove it there and then without anasthetic and just a sterilised knife; which scared the f**k out of him until someone found the bullet.
