A really sick and disturbing one was this guy who used to call

my grandmother (who was a sprightly 85 years old at the time) about once a fortnight over a period of a few months. He insisted on calling her Elizabeth (her real name is Louisa of PMVG fame) and even told her what she was doing so he was obviously somewhere in the area.

The police took it very seriously (or at least said they did), as did we, but the calls continued and the guy was never caught. After about 5 months a WPC arrived on my grandmother's doorstep with a whistle and told her to blow that down the phone as hard as she could next time.

She did. He didn't call again for two months. She did it again. He never called again.

Nice trick. Perforated eardrum :-)
