Economically a winner...socially a disaster....

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the deregulation of our economy and move from manufacturing to 'knowledge' industries she pioneered has given us a fighting chance in a globalised world.

Our old-school manufacturing industry - had it continued to be propped up by the state and controlled by unions - would have dragged us down into financial meltdown as it had no chance of competing with low-wage countries in Asia and Eastern Europe.

But her mortal hatred of socialism in its every form has contributed hugely to many of Britain's problems today - bad education, yobs on every street corner thinking they're above the law, an underclass that is now pretty much disconnected from the rest of society, etc etc. Even our nauseating celebrity culture comes in part from the "greed is good" 80s....

You can't have it all ways I guess.....
