There?s a list of Worthy?s ins and outs below, as complete as I can think of and corrected to take into account yesterday?s comments. It?s an interesting history, particularly when you come to summer 2005 and wince as you read the list of additions. I?ve divided the purchases into what I think are the successes and failures, judging them by how they have contributed to the team rather than on objective quality (thus Helveg has gone down as unsuccessful).
Comments welcome.
OBVIOUSLY SUCCESSFUL PURCHASES
Drury; Holt; Francis; Edworthy; Hucks; Leon; Safri; Gallacher; Ashton; Earnshaw; Croft. Total number = 11 out of 35, which is 31.5%. Total transfer fee cost of these players = ?9.91m, which is 64% of his total spend. That?s not a bad ratio IMHO.
OBVIOUSLY UNSUCCESSFUL PURCHASES
Crichton; Easton; Rivers; Emblen; Libbra; Heckingbottom; Briggs; Brennan; Helveg; Charlton; Jonson; Ward; Stuart; MLJ; Jarrett; Uncle Peter Thorne; Hughes. Total number = 17 out of 35, which is 48.5%. Total value in transfer fees = ?3.215m, which is 21%. Again, not a bad ratio (though of course this leaves wages out of account, and doubtless Worthy will have spent a lot of his budget on high wages for useless players even if they came on a free).
DEBATABLE/?JURY?S OUT? PURCHASES
Nielsen; Svenny (I was a fan but I know a lot weren?t so I?m putting him under ?debtable?); the Doc; Colin; Robinson; Etuhu; Dublin. Total number = 7 out of 35 = 20%. Total value = ?2.263m = 15%.
LOAN VERDICT
I would say that of his 21 loans, only 3 were a success ? Hucks, Crouch and Cooper. That?s poor.
CONCLUSIONS?
My own conclusion is that Worthy did quite well in the transfer market, with relatively few high value failures. But the record shows two huge purchasing cock-ups. The first was that he failed to strengthen us sufficiently when we got promoted. (EG If he had bought Ashton in the summer instead of in January, we would probably have stayed up.) The second, and this is the one that really stands out for me, was that he made a TOTAL BOLLOCKS of his purchases in the summer after relegation. That season he acquired MLJ, Jarrett, Uncle Peter, Andy Hughes, Jurgen Colin, Carl Robinson, and Etuhu. And he only got the last two after the failure of Hughes and Jarrett to play anything even faintly resembling football. No wonder we were a shambles last season. So he pissed away of our first season of parachute payments, and to my mind it is that failure more than any other which is (I hope) going to cost him his job.
