I can't speak for anyone else, but when a new player turns up I expect to see at least the basics - control, ability to pass, effort and some semblance of a footballing brain. Hence I thought Robinson wasn't a bad player who had some nous, but seemed to fall apart in the second halves when he got tired. I'm not saying he's a world-beater, but as he's proved this season, he's got some craft and guile.
The first time I saw Our Desmond was against Preston. If I remember my post-match words in a Norwich petrol station rightly, "He's just a big lumbering oaf who put about 5 minutes effort in all match". Which made it rather galling to see that sort of applicatino rewarded with a 3 1/2 year contract. Now it seems he's got his finger out, so good on him.
Other than enthusiasm, I am yet to see any sort of control, ability, or passing from Hooves. In fact, on a bad day, the only ability he shows is to be actively detrimental to his own team. Maybe I've missed his good days.
