and most people who claim he is are apologists and supporters, who are now embarrassed to admit that (see PP below).

Comments like the NATO forces ones are things he says because he believes them, and he's completely disinhibited so he says them. There's no advantage to him saying that (and this is likely to be one of the very few things he says that he actually has to row back on a bit, when he realises how difficult he's made things for the far-right parties in Europe that he supports).
