My first WC memories are from 74

As Anglo-Scots we were supporting Scotland, who went out on goal difference because they could only score 2 against Zaire. Lorimer hit the bar, Jordan missed a sitter, someone hit the post. I was so sad.

I then ignored the tournament until the final, when I decided to support West Germany. This led to the first serious conversation I ever remember having with my dad, when he explained to me how as a boy he’d been sent to Edinburgh to escape the Blitz because the Germans were trying to kill him, how frightened he’d been when German bombers attacked Leith, what the Holocaust was, what the Nazis had done when they occupied Holland and how utterly unacceptable it was for any Brit to support them. So I switched sides - and then blamed my dad for years for making me support the losers.
