Claiming xG and similar metrics are “too subjective” misses the point.

All metrics have assumptions. Even something as global as a country’s inflation rate is based on an arbitrary basket of goods and calculated differently across nations. The key is consistency. As long as the underlying data is gathered the same way, trends emerge and conclusions are meaningful. xG works the same way, it’s not perfect, but it’s a reliable indicator of team performance over time.
