I don't think our players are nearly as good as we kid ourselves they are

And not surprising really, because so few people play cricket here now.

Root, Stokes, maybe one day Brook aside, I don't think we really have many top level players. Yes they can compete at home in conditions that opponents who can't really play in those conditions. But when we go abroad to play anyone half decent - not really, and that's mostly been the case for years.

And so we always blame 'mentality', or 'approach', or just the coach. Even though it's basically been the same under multiple coaches, captains, approaches, the odd tour aside. Suspect the problem is the one constant thing, that we don't have good enough players.
