What Americans call “intangibles”. In other words, the aspects to a player which you cannot determine through stats and film alone.
Manning seems to be clear that this is the problem. Attitude, work rate, team ethic, and just generally not being a c**t.
What I hear is that Knapper is so focused on the data that he’s not doing his homework on the intangibles. He’s not phoning people who managed them before, former team mates etc. And now Manning is frustrated that they’re not living up to his KPIs based on their historical performance and doesn’t understand why.
The thing about intangibles is that they are the hardest of all to influence and therefore one of the most important aspects to research before recruiting.
All boils down to inexperienced, and excel sheet recruitment to me, and paying the price for it that any chance experienced recruiter would have seen coming.
