There's nothing the government can realistically do

The key word in your statement is 'perception'. Virtually none of the people protesting have any personal experience of asylum seekers being overwhelmingly 'criminals' or 'parasites', they're just being told they are on social media and the right wing controlled mainstream media. As long as they keep being told it's an issue (and they will because it's a very easy and simplistic - people generally aren't interested in the complexity of reality - way to stir up anti government feeling), they'll keep protesting, whatever the actual situation is.
The country has been completely screwed by the last few Tory governments, as well as plenty of circumstances simply outside of government control (we have so many issues now that asylum seekers in hotels in all reality probably wouldn't even make the top 20 of actual, rather than perceived, problems).
