Old people have no vested interest in the country's future...

or even (thanks to the Triple Lock) the present. Vote to trash the economy? Yeah, why not, we're protected from it.
Plus listen to old people anywhere and it is obvious that their opinions are utterly dominated by a dislike of being old, to the extent that they are opposed to pretty much anything that makes them feel old i.e. is different from when they were young in the 50s and 60s. Basing your country's policies on a whiney nostalgia is the surest way to disaster.
Obviously this isn't true of all old people but it is astonishingly prevalent.
Nobody could reasonably claim 16-17 year olds, who have an overwhelming interest in the country's future, should be denied a vote while so many who have none are allowed it?
