The boats are a distraction

It is the legal immigration which has put pressure on housing stock.
Another thing to consider is government policy towards landlords:
George Osbourne was the initiator of measures to discourage the private rental sector and Labour have probably put the final nail in the coffin for the sector.
The result is far fewer home available to rent (not everybody wants to buy) and rents have skyrocketed.
This will get far more painful for potential tenants, anybody with any kind of bad credit or lower earnings doesn’t stand a chance or getting a rental property.
