It *was* a transition season - but with some gateway reviews to tick off

These would probably have revolved around a sense of progress, player development, style, cohesion etc.

If the club got to March and thought that none of these were being ticked then fair enough.

I do have an issue with ZW's column though. It's as if she was trying to retrofit the season's goals. It was ham-fisted, inconsistent with previous messaging and unsettling.

I imagine when Knapper does his end of season interviews, the top six guff will be quietly shelved and the message about stalled progress within a longer term project will be to the fore.
