and I agree with what he's saying, for me if I'm not sure if I'm pushing an easy run too much I just count out loud. If I can say 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 with little effort all in one breath I'm in the "easy" zone which is where I want to be for most of my miles these days (and actually should have spent more time at when I ran more seriously). If I can get to three and then need to draw breath I'm somewhere near the steady/threshold boundary. If I'm doing speed intervals I dont' bother as I know what I'm doing on those anyway, similarly for hill sprints. At my age and weight now it's all a bit pathetic these days and I just go for a few miles a few times a week and call it quits, so take all this with a pinch of salt.
