I remember that tour down under in the eighties, one of the ODIs

We needed 18 off the last over which back then was almost literally unheard of, as soon as the rate hit six an over the game was thought effectively over. Allan Lamb got them with a ball to spare (was it Daffy up the other end, can't remember, but whoever it was didn't get on strike anyway). Allan Border cried coming off the field.

These days such things are so routine you do wonder if the balance hasn't swung too far in favour of the batters.
