Its kind of a self fulfilling prophecy....

We started losing games and Wagner was under pressure, so he goes to a safer/tighter style (getting points but dull as dishwater). Once we start losing again the pressure mounts again.

Farke did this in his first season where he went to 5 at the back to pick up some 1-0 wins to keep us in mid-table.
Even with Maddison, we didn't have the overall squad quality to do anything else.
Once we had a bit of a clear out and brought in some players we could then change things.
