and query the sense in keeping an SD in post whose only motivation is his short term CV

I know it's slightly different as presumably he doesn't want to stitch his wife up by leaving a load of s**t behind (unless she's planning to be off too...) but I think this is an(other) instance of the Board not being particularly commercially savvy.
