40 years ago it didn't really matter what division you were in. You just went to the game and experienced it more as an event in its own right. The creation of the media monstrosity of the Premier League has generated the impression that if you aren't in the Premier League you're nothing and fans now feed off that, poisoning the everyday match-going experience - instead of being an experience in its own right it is just about the big picture of getting to or staying in the PL, and if you aren't then the experience is somehow rendered worthless. Every football game only has as many losers as winners so over the long term your team will ALWAYS lose as many games as you win (unless you're one of the handful of big teams at the top). That's just part of the experience - if you want your team to win more than you lose most of the time (and obviously as fans that's what you'd prefer) you will always end up disappointed because it simply isn't possible. A bit part of being a fan is learning to live with that unfortunate reality.
