I think the difference is that

Emi and Todd (the good version) would drop deep and already have seen the break out pass to transition to attack.

In fact that was a huge issue with Todd - on the days he did that he was very effective and we were better. Other games he just jogged about on half way and offered no outlet. Same result as today.

I think it has not so much to do with midfielders not dropping into that deep central position, but rather the other midfielders / wingers getting out and finding space to receive the break out pass from that deep midfielder.

Sometimes they all drop deep and don't move, and then we cannot play it through the middle any more, so our only outlet is pass it back to Kenny who hoofs (sorry, I mean plays a 50yd precision pass) to Aarons or Dimi.
