STRINGER EYES NEW COACH FOR CANARIES

FORMER City boss Dave Stringer believes Norwich's new first team coach needs to be a man who can slip seamlessly into his new role.

Stringer was at the helm at Carrow Road between 1987 and 1992, overseeing one of the Canaries' most successful periods on the pitch.

Dave Williams, Norwich's current Academy technical director, was the man at Stringer's side back then.

Williams has been ruled out of the running for the job created by the sacking of Steve Foley two weeks ago.

But Stringer said the man boss Nigel Worthington appointed would need to be someone he trusted and could have a good relationship with both on and off the field.

"That's very, very important," he said, speaking after successfully managing the winning side in a charity match at Carrow Road organised for Football Aid.

"When I was manager I had a good coach in Dave Williams. He did an excellent job and is still at the club doing an excellent job.

"I had worked with Dave before we became manager and coach so I knew him as well as he knew me so we always got on well.

"You need to get on well, not only on the football side of things. It's not good having someone there who doesn't fit in with the ideas you have because that can lead to conflict.

"It's an important position to fill."

As revealed by CanariesWorld last week, City are at an "advanced stage" of appointing a new coach to oversee first team training sessions at Colney.

Speculation is mounting as to who will be brought in as Foley's replacement, although staff are keen to have someone in place well before the start of pre-season training.

Stringer was back on the sidelines at Carrow Road on Monday for the match in aid of Football Aid, an charity organisation which sees people bidding for the right to play at the home of the Canaries.

Stringer's side, captained by Robert Fleck, won 3-2 against a side including former Norwich midfielder Jeremy Goss.
