I was probably taught loads of stuff to GCSE but buggered if any of it sank in and I still struggle with Excel formulas.

He's not talking about making everyone do A-Level standard maths but I can see the real world benefit of some applied/real world classes in personal financial management, basic business accounting, understanding tax, working with fecking Excel.

We did a doss subject 'General Studies' which would have been perfect for covering this sort of stuff. You could throw in basic consumer law, how UK politics works, basic first aid, using powerpoint, offside rule, etc etc.
