I wouldn't agree the atmosphere of this WC has been sterile.

The fans who have made the trip seem to be enjoying themselves, are making lots of noise, and as you say mixing with each other without any trouble. There were "apparently" almost 89,000 at the Argentina-Mexico match the highest attendance since the 1994 final.
