but we have so many players of a similar ability, so Smith keeps chopping and changing personnel in an attempt to find the right mix.

In both 18/19 and 20/21 we all knew what our best team was. We arguably had a weaker bench than now (when all are fit), but the team was more of a well-oiled machine.

Fixture compression because of the World Cup makes it more difficult, but regularly changing the whole three behind Pukki isn't really helping with "the plan" imo. Even if I understand why he's doing it.
