I heard Fiona Hill being interviewed - the woman from County Durham

who is a massive Putin/Russia expert. She’s been presidential adviser for several presidents and I have a lot of time for her. I think she knows her stuff (although, as has been said, it’s clearly a complex issue with different viewpoints).

Anyway it was driving her crazy that the west was somehow being blamed for the war because of the expansion of NATO. She is absolutely convinced that there is something within Putin and his desperation for Russia to be like the Russia of Peter the Great era. It’s nothing to do with wanting to go back to the post war communist Soviet Union era. He simply cannot accept that Ukraine is a separate country with its own identity and history. He deems them lesser than Russians and would have been determined to crush them whatever was happening with NATO.
