Although I grind my own beans to make espresso in a Gaggia at home, I've never tried it in the aeropress.
However, i as far as an espresso machine goes ( and I would assume it's the same for all methods) grinding your own beans makes a massive difference.
How you grind them will depend on what type of coffee you like but an aeropress is going to work best with espresso type coffee for which you will need a burr grinder. I have a Baratza Encore and that is about the bottom end that suffices ( I have often considered upgrading but will probably wait till it packs up)
As for type of beans, depends what type of coffee you like. I only drink strong, black espresso, preferably with a good thick crema. As such I tend to use dark roasted, oily beans like the French and Italian style frm Waitrose but there are so many places to get them on line, the world is your oyster. I'm currently using shade gown beans from Bloom and Wild to do my bit for the environment
