We had a fantastic opportunity to consolidate a position in the Premiership, in the season that was probably the easiest ever to earn survival.
But a combination of poor signings, poor tactics, the TOTALLY wrong attitude and mindset saw us lose 6-0 in a must-win match to send us down.
Even after that, we had a fantastic opportunity to use our new financial clout (comparative to most Champ clubs) in order to make a swift return to the Premiership this season. But alas, again, Worthington has signed players that aren't good enough to do the job, that cost more than any other club would have been prepared to pay.
I'm not saying that I expected promotion this season, but I at least expected some sort of rebuild that showed we meant business and wanted to taste sucess again. However, this didn't happen. Instead we were left with a team that found it necessary to resort to hoofball tactics and playing numerous players out of position, which absolutely is not acceptable.
The style of football we've played this season has certainly not justified the amount of money it has cost the fans to pay for their season tickets etc.. But yet we still have a huge number of fans that have renewed their ST (like myself). This is because we love Norwich City FC, and will be here longer than any manager or board member will.
However, coupled with our love of Norwich City and the fact that we pay a vast amount of money for the privilege of watching them week in week out throughout the years is the utmost good faith that the board will use our money wisely and have similar goals to ourselves.
Any fan, of any club in this country would love to see their team play Premiership football on a regular basis, however, our board seem to be happy with mid-table mediocrity that we had to endure (but at times enjoy) for 9 years subsequent to our previous relegation. Why is this? We have such great potential to take this club to the next level, but the board is content to keep a manager that, in my opinion, is definitely a hindrance to our progress and not a help is an absolutely fundamental error on their part.
I feel this decision is partly due to their relationship with him, but also due to their eminently business over football mantra. For example, the new hotel instead of a stand is evidence of this.
Nigel Worthington has brought us limited success during his tenure here, but I believe that entrusting him with the last of our parachute payments next season for him to sign yet another batch of similarly poor players akin to those purchased this season is a gross error on the part of the board.
His attitude towards the fans is far from "first class", and his record during his time in management speaks for itself. He should not be given this much patience by Norwich City FC.
