Sounds like rats mate...

Do you have bird feeders in the garden? You need to get rid of them. But get a professional in, don't just put poison down as you'll end up killing all those moggies and a few birds. Most cats won't take on a fully grown rat btw. And traps are pretty unreliable as rats are crafty buggers that get suspicious very quickly.
