I don't know if you're right about Nigel being thick as s**t: I suspect it may be more due to his having made the wrong calculations of how to correct his mistakes. Life, as we all know, is all about playing the hand you're dealt, and it's also true that one has lessons to learn all the time.
An example - a few years ago I was really close to a bob-on system for the horses. Not a system, exactly, more a method. It was close, as I say, but needed tweaking: so I tweaked it, and then again, and then again and so on. As a result I've f**ked it so badly that I can't remember how it worked when it was working.
Nigel, I think, has suffered the same sort of flop: he took a decent team to the Prem, made a guess at what he'd need to do to it, got things wrong, tried to correct that, got that wrong too (with circumstances conspiring against him) and things have spiralled downwards from there.
As for the idea that people might get back on board if he were to turn things around, a couple of observations: one, maybe they would but they'd all remain deeply suspicious of him; two, I'm not sure if anyone can unlearn as much as our Nigel must.
In short: Worthy out.
