in recent years I've seen little evidence that Root has been given the data or tools to tactically outfox the opposition. He seems a decent bloke, but doesn't seem to have the spark to make that stuff up on the hoof (although to be honest, with the analytics now, it's doubtful how much that matters, in tests at any rate).

Like you say, the coaching of pretty basic stuff seems to actually make our players worse. At this level, it's not the nuts and bolts (they all know how to field), but the actual preparation seems garbage.
