Truth is to win a major tournament you need to have at least a few world class players (only exception was Greece?). We don't have any. In 1966 we had 5, and 1 of them didn't even get picked for the final. We seem to have a pool of players who are adequate internationally. Would Dier, Dele or Lingard have been any better or any worse last night? And whilst Kane was truly s**t, what is the alternative? Put aside the jingoistic journalism and the truth is that this squad, or any squad that Southgate could pick, just isn't good enough.
