Before you posted that I was researching this point and had come across this paper User Posted Link

which looks perfectly respectable and says that the data does not support the idea that the "more restrictive" non-pharmaceutical interventions (ie lockdowns) have any major additional effect over the "less restrictive".

"we find no clear, significant beneficial effect of mrNPIs on case growth in any country"

Sod this, I'm confused all over again. I'm off to do some law, at least I understand it.
