This was probably the nub of contention in our earlier discussion a few weeks ago - by the spring I fully expect there to be some decent candidates on the vaccine side and another raft of treatments to mitigate the viruses effects.

With that in mind ,I'm less worried about restrictions over the winter months as I think the longer term damage of spiking deaths and long covid in the young over the winter would eclipse the impact of restrictions (as mooted currently).

A vaccine won't be a silver bullet. (there'll be a number of vaccines) but they'll help, they'll be rolled out to people at risk first, and once those are covered it might not be worth covering the remainder of the population - but that's a long way from saying open the gates and see where the chips fall (which would run the risk of people dying because the hospitals can't cope with the numbers - perfectly feasible when you look at bed numbers and what's going on over the channel).
