I used one this summer and still don't know the answer I'm afraid

When I was in rural Norfolk and my phone signal was poor, I found a good spot in the house and it was fast like wifi on my laptop.

When I was in Wales and my mobile was getting no signal, my dongle was similarly useless.

So perhaps the answer is that they are faster than a mobile signal, if you get a signal at all.

Or not, I'm not sure.
