Even at a few deaths it was obvious we were heading for catastrophe because we matched Italy’s trajectory all the way in terms of cases
But it should be remembered that lockdown was never even thought about until Italy did it. The plan was to let it spread without overwhelming the NHS, until we realised far too late in mid March that we’d end up killing a quarter of a million because double the number of hospitalisations would need ICU care than we’d predicted. Despite having plenty of evidence from China and Italy already.
