don;t know if you are watching it but it was really a reference to the fact that during that spell of the game SA were setting up fairly obvious plans with catching fielders being placed for specific shots on the leg side and our openers both got out to them then Root came in and almost straight away top edged a pre-meditated sweep shot to an area where SA had put a fielder (thankfully too deep) and very nearly got out.
Although i've never faced an 80mph plus bowler i appreciate that so much at that level must be instinctive. If someone bowled one on my leg stump i'd probably hole out as well if I managed to hit it! Fielding sides set up traps and batsmen fall for them. The fielding side should obviously get credit for that.
I get bogged down when batting I also can never stop myself from playing a stupid shot on the rare occasions I play now! Never could and still can't. Glass houses and all that.
