Why did the green lot go against that?

Surely common sense tells you to try and keep the rivers flowing? Obviously where I am we have Welney wash which is huge flood plain nearby and that nice Dutch man (no not Steve from Holland) Mr Vermuyden helped design the drainage for the fens but they are still building massive developments on low level plains at Ely. It won't end well.
