if you isolate his comments on the nature of modern scrutiny from the individual that has sparked the debate today, it's hard to disagree with the general thrust of his comments: that modern media/social media *is* brutal and the unwary *can* end up being chewed up and spat out very quickly (and very messily) for moments of thoughtlessness long ago.
But much like how Conrad should have put a bit more thought into how he was going to approach the election campaign and deal with his past comments, Jim could possibly have thought twice about whether Conrad was really the best example to use to illustrate his general point.
