the backstop is a massive win for NI. Effectively it had the potential to become the UK's bolthole/gateway to the EU with presumably the possibility for firms to open up satellite offices there etc. IF the DUP could see past the ideology.
I would say this latest proposal is about as close as you will get to them doing so but the "Stormont lock" is clearly going to be the issue. Whether the two sides can negotiate something satisfactory on that 9or something that at least has the vague appearance of being satisfactory for both sides) is the big question.
Of course you also come back to do the EU want a whole load of sh*t guaranteed at the end of October or do they take a position where there might be a load of sh*t in 5, 10 years time and decide that is the lesser of two evils on the basis that you would hope that by that point it will either be working so NI won't want to leave or if it isn't and they do they will have had that time to work out how to deal with the border.
