IIRC the backstop can be terminated if there's a change in public sentiment to it in NI, or something equally woolly (ie a nice get-out-of-the-backstop if it causes a ruck).
The big change is the de facto border in the Irish Sea, which seems to be so utterly common sense to me and kerching! for NI, that I've never really understood why it's been such a stumbling block.
After all, if we can have a UK/NI divergence in basic fundamental rights such as abortion laws without the DUP minding that they are not aligned with rUK...
