Cummings wants chaos and for a large (though not necessarily a majority) of the population to buy into his bulls**t “people’s prime minister thwarted by the evil parliamentarians and meddling foreigners” narrative. As much as I and plenty of others think it’s dangerous and deceptive and could lead us to an even darker place, polls show that quite a few are lapping it up. This is very worrying, regardless of your position on Brexit.
Fundamentally there is no deal that will please even a slight majority inside or outside parliament, and no deal is the equivalent of shooting yourself in both feet and the crotch for good measure. So whatever happens we’re totally f**ked.
A sane democracy and government would negotiate a deal and then put that back to the public in a referendum (negotiated deal v remain) but the country is so divided and the noise so loud from both sides that it would be even more of a shambles than the previous one, with even more dubious data harvesting/targeted social media advertising and shouty rhetoric based on appealing to base fears and emotions. A one issue general election would be an utter disaster too, not just because it would most likely deliver another hung parliament but also because elections should be about a range of policies - the government we elect will have five years to potentially do whatever they like, remember - rather than just one depressingly polarising issue.
