They don't want you to use Outlook. They want you to use their web software instead. So they do this "critical security error" bulls**t around IMAP access.
To fix it use a web browser to get into your gmail account (go to gmail.com and log in). Then click on Settings (cog-shaped icon top right). Select "ACcounts and IMport" then under the top set of options "Other Google Account Settings". Then follow "security issues" - might say "security issues found". Under "Third Party Access" there's an option to allow "less secure access" - you want to turn that ON. Then restart your Outlook client and all should be fine.
Also note gmail is no longer unlimited space - it's now 15GB max and you pay for more than that. Another sneaky change.
