Most counter attacking teams are compact in defence and midfield

and spring forward quickly on the break. See Leicester's title-winning team.

Southgate has managed to create a counter-attacking team that can *only* counter attack and is rubbish without the ball. He talks about building a possession-based team but doesn't pick a single midfielder who is good at keeping possession.

He's created the total opposite of a possession-based team.
