and I suspect Boris does better than most in buttressing them against that. So the logic works both ways and on their terms Boris is a rational choice, from a party perspective.

It's hard to imagine a more unlikely sentence than "Boris is a rational choice" from a country perspective of course. However the alternatives on offer are not overly inspiring either.
