My own take is that they’ve given up on Brexit for now and are looking to the next GE as the only way to break the deadlock in parliament.

So they want someone who they think can beat Corbyn, which means deciding whether to try to steal his Remain voters (= choose Rory) or his Leave voters (= choose Boris). Looks pretty clear which they think is the horse to back.
